Dr. Joe Shannon

Lead Scientist, Applied Hydrology
Dr. Joe Shannon joined Vibrant Planet in 2023 as the Lead Scientist for Applied Hydrology. His focus is on incorporating the protection, enhancement, and restoration of hydrologic functions into natural resource planning. Joe has a wide range of experience in forested ecosystems having worked in academic research, timber sale preparation, and climate tech. He spent 14 years researching the effects and interactions of forest management, invasive species, and climate change on ecosystem function and water use. Following his time as a researcher he joined the Natural Capital Exchange (NCX) as a data scientist, where he contributed to building a marketplace for nature based solutions and led work on novel causal inference approaches for forest carbon projects. He graduated with a B.Sc.F. from the University of New Hampshire, a M.Sc. from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, and a Ph.D. from Michigan Technological University.
